When it comes to your wedding reception once you have booked your venue your attention will turn to your wedding menu for wedding breakfast. Choosing your wedding menu is not as simple as it may seem and there are many different aspects that you will need to consider.

Budget: You will need to ensure you set a realistic budget based on your anticipated number of guests. Usually your catering costs including the evening buffet and drinks for the wedding breakfast can be around 10% of your total wedding budget. This can be a good figure to start with and then adjust as you work through the other aspects of your wedding menu that you need to consider.

Sit down or buffet: A formal sit down meal is the more traditional style but also the most expensive. A buffet can be a more cost effective means of feeding lots of guests. Usually there is a sit down meal for the wedding breakfast and then a second buffet serving for the evening party.

In-House or Private Caterers: Your venue maybe able to provide catering for the wedding depending upon the type of venue it is. Some venues will allow you to bring in private caterers, for instance, if you are hiring the grounds of a hotel and erecting a marquee then they maybe more open to bringing in private caterers, a restaurant on the other hand probably wouldn’t! It is worth exploring both options if your venue will allow it so you can compare prices and packages, as well as the quality of the catering provided.

Number of Courses: If you opt for a sit down meal how many courses do you wish to serve? Three is usual with a starter, main course and dessert (coffee and wedding cake don’t often count as an additional course); more courses could include entrees or canapés, fish course, cheese course etc. Your budget will most likely determine the number of courses and you can save money by serving your wedding cake as dessert.

Dietary Requirements: Some of your guests may have particular dietary requirements such as vegetarians, vegans, diabetics etc. A good caterer should consult with you about these special requirements and many will offer common dietary needs within their packages. Make sure you ask your guests to tell you of an special food needs well in advance of the day.

What Do You Want To Eat: Your hardest decision will be on what to actually eat on your menu for wedding. There can be a temptation to go all out for luxury dishes or haute cuisine just because it is your wedding and whilst this is your prerogative you need to remember that it is not just yourselves eating this food. Your guests will most likely have a range of dietary tastes, likes and dislikes and for sure you will not please them all with every dish, but it is important to try to choose a menu that offers something for everyone, even if the food is quite simple and perhaps not so extravagant!

Your caterers will be able to advise on the best dishes to suit your wedding breakfast and what to include on your menu. They will have the experience to know what goes down well at a wedding and what is popular with guests. Make sure you have tasting sessions and make a note of your favorite dishes before designing your wedding
